DESCRIPTIONS OF INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS

            The purposes of these assignments are to learn and practice the skills required to be an effective manager. As part of your first assignment you should submit a job description. The job description can be one from the current position that you now hold, one that you hope to hold, or one that you held in the past. The job must be a professional level posi­tion. This description is not graded, but is intended to assist the professor in understanding your assignments. The job description should be included as an appendix to each of your individual assignments. Each of the first six assignments when done individually should not exceed five pages, type-written, double-spaced. Pictorial representations (diagrams, charts, etc.) are not counted in the page limitation.

            When your group is assigned a skill to present to the class, the group is responsible for preparing a paper and an electronic presentation (e.g. PowerPoint with narration). The paper and presentation should cover both the strengths and weaknesses/pitfalls/traps of the skill, ways to overcome the weakness/pitfall/traps, and a development exercise/activity for your classmates.
bullet 1: Your Objectives
In this assignment you are expected to submit a well developed goal statement for each of the following four types of goals - routine, problem solving, creative, and self-development. You are also expected to write a critical analysis of the use of goals. In all critical analysis you are expected to explicitly discuss the strengths and weaknesses/pitfalls, and how the weaknesses/pitfalls may be overcome.
bulletAssignment 2: Your Plan
In this assignment you are expected to submit a well developed plan for one of the goals you submitted in the prior assignment. The plan should indicate the people, decisions, resources, actions, timing, and coordination required. A written plus a pictorial representation is expected in this assignment. In addition, a critical essay on the use of planning is also expected.
bulletAssignment 3: Your Coaching Guide
In this assignment you are to develop a method for coaching a subordinate that you have identified as being deficient in a particular job related skill. You should describe both the process and the technique you would use for coaching. Either in the description or the critical essay identify and explain the importance of the critical steps or elements in each. A critical essay covering the strengths and weaknesses/pitfalls of coaching is also expected.

Assignment 4 - Conducting a Performance Appraisal
In this assignment you are to put forth the techniques you would use to conduct a formal performance appraisal session. You are also to consider how you would handle objections. You should describe both the process and the technique you would use for conducting a performance appraisal. Either in the description or the critical essay identify and explain the importance of the critical steps or elements in each. A critical essay covering the strengths and weaknesses/pitfalls of performance appraisal is also expected.
bulletAssignment 5 - Developing a Reward Plan
In this assignment you are expected to develop a personal reward plan that describes how you plan to ensure that both you and your subordinates receive appropriate rewards. This plan can have two tiers. The plan should also cover multiple sources and types of rewards. A critical essay on the use of reward systems is also expected.
bulletAssignment 6 - Your Action Plan
In this assignment you are expected to develop an action plan to complete one of the goals in assignment one, but not used in assignment two. The action plan should include the goal, a plan, possible facilitation required, feedback, contingencies, and potential reinforcements. As usual a critical essay is expected.

Self, Group, and Peer Appraisal - *** Required ***
This portion of the final is graded on a complete/incomplete basis. Failure to complete this assignment on time will result in a deduction of five points from one of your assignments.

For the self and group appraisal list for each the three things that you or your group did well and the three things that you or your group should have done differently. For the peer appraisal, complete the form attached to the syllabus.
